Internet access for the “Silver surfers” in this grade 1 listed building was achieved by successfully installing Power Line Communication solution in 2007.
There are few institutions in the United Kingdom with an unbroken three centuries of service and none of them is so close to the heart of the nation as “The Men in Scarlet”, the Chelsea Pensioners, and their home, the Royal Hospital Chelsea (RHC). Founded in 1682 by King Charles II and intended for the ‘succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war’, the Royal Hospital, with its Grade 1 listed buildings, still serves its original purpose and intends to continue to further its role well into the 21st Century.
Michael Thomas founder of Pioneering Networks was honoured to be given the opportunity to provide internet connectivity to Royal Hospital Chelsea using Powerline communication devices. The unique “invisible” system feeds internet connections via the electrical mains everywhere around the building. There was no need for additional cabling or other installation work that might have a detrimental effect on the magnificent exterior and interior of this Grade 1 listed building.
This flexible and expandable Powerline communication network was installed in a short time in each wing of the hospital. One of the requirements of Royal Hospital Chelsea was to allow new users to gain access to the Internet without the need for remembering passwords and have access from the Long Rooms and the individual Berths, which raised the need for enhances security and sufficient range of the system. Powerline communication was the ideal cost-effective solution as it combined the enhanced security, optimum range and speed of a cabled network with the convenience and mobility of a wireless network.
The site is monitored remotely 24/7 every day of the year so in the rare event of a problem occurring it can be dealt with promptly by Pioneering Networks.
